Wikis

Wikis

"Wiki" is the word for "fast" in Hawaiian. A wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses them to contribute or modify the content easily. Wikis are often used to create collaborative sites and to power online communities. Wikis are used in education to allow students to co-create documents and research topics collaboratively. Watch the video on wikis (4 min.)

The collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page is the most popular example of a wiki today. Wikis have several key characteristics, which include:

• May invites all users to edit any page or to create new pages within the wiki Website, using only a simple Web browser.

• Promotes meaningful topic associations between different pages by making page link creation intuitively easy and showing whether an intended target page exists or not.

• Seeks to involve the visitor in an ongoing process of creation and collaboration that constantly changes the Website landscape. A wiki enables documents to be written collaboratively, iteratively, in a simple markup language using a Web browser. A single page in a wiki Website is referred to as a “wiki page”. The entire collection of pages, which are usually well interconnected by hyperlinks, is "the wiki". A defining characteristic of wiki technology is the ease with which pages can be created and updated. Many wikis are open to alteration by the general public. Many edits can be made in real-time and appear almost instantly online.

  1. The fundamental difference between blogs and wikis is that wikis are created collectively, while the content of your blog can be edited solely by you - others can only leave comments.

  2. Blogs work according to individual principle - only one person, a blog`s creator, may post and edit information. Wikis imply collective work, as any member of a group may make alternations, edit information, create new posts. Wikis are organized mostly not for occasional readers, but for groups of people who want to achieve a certain aim together.

  3. A blog is a sort of online journal. It is updated daily or weekly or whenever the author desires. A wiki is a platform that is meant for anyone to update in real time. A blog is owned by an individual whereas wiki is being updated by many people around the world.

  4. The main differences between Wikis and blogs are as following:
    Wikis have multiple authors whereas blogs - usually a single author (sometimes can have multiple contributors);
    Wikis, unlike blogs (when author posts, user comments) are edited by a group or a team;
Wikis contain links to other Wiki pages and are continuously changing and growing rapidly, supposed to be many-to-many communication whereas blogs are like opinion sharing and represent one-to-many content.

  5. A blog is a "website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in reverse chronological order".only blog's creator may edit information here.

A wiki is "a website that allows visitors to add, remove, edit, and change content...and allows for linking among any number of pages".

A blog is a flow of information while wiki is a place to stock information

  6. Blogs are about communicating, wikis are about getting work done, or working together.
For blogs, the timeline is more important. For wikis, when an article was published matters less, because articles are supposed to be updated as new information becomes available. Blog posts are usually one persons' opinion, followed optionally by comments. Wiki articles represent consensus, but can have an associated discussion/talk page.

  7. * A blog is a personal space for expressing subjective opinion. It could be regarded as analogous to working memory, where you toss ideas around and, if you're lucky, test them against your peers through a process of dialogue.
    * A wiki, on the other hand, is a collective space for objectivising knowledge (or at least information). It could be analogous to long-term memory, where you store all those things that you've tested out and are happy with for now.

  8. blog it is something like online journal, that can abdate every day or every week.
A wiki is a website that allows the creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser using a simplified markup language or a WYSIWYG text editor.
Wikis serve different purposes. Some permit control over different functions.Wikis are organized mostly not for occasional readers, but for groups of people who want to achieve a certain aim together.

  9. Wiki is a website for collective work of people, who can contribute and modify the content. For example, it is an easy way for conjoint planning, where every one takes part . It is a source of internet for groups of people, where they achieve a certain aim together.
Blog is written by one person, creator. Other visitors can not change and edit the content, they just comment.

  10. Blog is centered on one person, who writes there whatever he or she wants. Other people can only read it and comment, but they can't change anything. Wiki is a collective page that anyone within the registered group can change or add new information there.

  11. Blog is a webpage where person can create own 'world', to be the main editor of the page, edit and control everything on the page. All visitors can be only guests and they can comment and look through the information blogger has downloaded. Blogger can decide who will have a right to see all that was written, downloaded.
Wiki is a website where person or group of people can create own projects. Usually wiki projects are result of work of group of people. It is possible to control access to the page. Usually group of people create wiki projects which can be edited only by chosen people.

  13. Blog can include at least one link per entry and a point of view. Blogs lie somewhere on a continuum between personal disclosure vs. outward-oriented. Blog is usually personal and includes external links. Wiki has many authors and its structure is determined by content and users objective. Includes external and internal links.

  14. Nowadays blogs are necessary for teaching English, especially for students. The aim of the blog is to tell or to show some information. It's like a copy-book, but better because it's written in the Internet and causes more interest that on the paper.
The other irreplaceable thing is wiki. It's the best variant of collective work for part-time students, who have no opportunity to get together. :) Wiki will help to create some new and extraordinary project. It's a good chance for those who has many ideas but doesn't know now to make them a reality. :)

  16. The basic organizing principle or "information architecture" of a blog is called reverse chronological order. Date and time is the critical differentiator and the newest posting always appears first, at the top of the home page. The basic organizing principle of a wiki could be defined as the absence of any principle beyond the hyperlink, at least the absence of any particular structure. Wiki entries could be edited and improved over time, the wiki valued more permanent knowledge; the blog valued the latest ephemeral headlines and instant reactions from commentators. While there are group blogs and organizational blogs with multiple contributors, the overwhelming number of blogs still speaks in the voice of a single author. And while wikis are still a favorite tool for personal information management, the typical wiki has multiple contributors.
Today's blogs and wikis share many properties. They both excel at easily adding new posts or new entries, with minimal editing skills demanded of the user. They both can use the latest categorization and tagging schemes, and they can generate RSS feeds to notify those following their growth of content blow-by-blow.

  17. Both blogs and wikis are used for communication between people. They have a lot in common. Their users can easily add comments, photos or videos. But blogs and wikis have their own features. Blogs are created by single person, whereas wikis are created by group of people. It's easy to check the visitors of your page in blog. And it is possible for you to find out people who left comments on your page. We can't say the same about wiki. Pages within the wiki Website can be modified by different people. The information is available for everyone.

  18. Both, blogs and wiki are used to share information and for comunication. The main difference is that the blog "creater" is the only person who can change the information while other peaople can just give comments on it. In the case of wiki the process is differ. One person creates wiki and then send it to her/his friends or to the like-minded people, who in their turn have the ability to co-operate this site, to add or to deleet - change the information.

  19. Blog is more private according to it's character, because it belongs only to one person. Others can merely comment on the topic. In this case blogs are alike with on-line diaries. They are aimed mostly at sharing information, expressing own ideas just fore anyone to read and give the response.

Wiki is based on a group work, where each member of a group can make his/her contribution in the process of collaboration. So, wikis make it possible to work together on some project or anything else at one place - on wiki-page. Thus collaboration becomes centered and coordinated.

  20. Blogs and Wikis have common features. They are created for on-line communication between people. We can share our ideas, we can argue, we can ask some questions and answer them. But actually blogs can be created only by one person. Others can only leave their comments, but only one person can create or delete this blog, can change design.
Wikis are created for a group-work. Many people can work in Wiki in the same time, they can be involved in work all together, I think it is better to use Wikis in class, because all students can work together on some project. It is better to use blogs as a home-task for students. For example, teacher can ask students to visit his or her blog and leave there comments on some topic.

  21. In Blog information is organized chronologically; usually there is one author, others – comment.

In Wiki information on particular topics is collected by a group of people; it’s constantly changing, growing rapidly.

  22. Blogs and Wikis are popular among many people nowadays. We can use them not only for communication but also for sharing with useful information which can be used for our own profits in any sphere of our life (including our studying). The main difference is that blogs are more private, they belong to the certain person and you know the sender of the comment. Blogs can be used as on-line diary where you share with your ideas and thoughts. As was mentioned in the video, blogs control your information.
Wikis were compared with freedom of speech. Here you can add information which wasn't mentioned before and correct the previous one. Wikis are the form of collective work. People create the page and unite other people in the group that is interested in the definite subject. Wikis are available for everybody.

  23. Blogs and wikis are good way to share information.
Blog is more individual - it's a kind of a "diary" for a person.
Wiki is a good decision when you work in groups, e.g when you work over some project.

But it is much better to gether and work face to face. :)

  24. The difference between blog and Wiki is vividly seen. The first is more personal while the latter is collaborative. In Wiki "everyone's voice can be heard" as Mr. Kennedy stated in the video above))) Thus everyone can contribute to it. But in blog you can only leave a comment to the monitor without changing anything.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The main difference between Wikis and Blogs is that wiki is edited by a big number of people, and blog is more personal. The last one looks like diary or journal. In blog there is only one author who writes his thougths and ideas, in wiki every person who accesses it can share his opinion. Wikis wold be very useful for some particular group of people who has common interests, goals or work. As for discussions there is lso a difference. In blogs it takes place only in comments and in wikis you can do it on special forum or on the page.

  26. A Wiki is much more like a "traditional"
website than a blog is. Once a page is created on a Wiki, it's just there (unless it's deleted,
just as with any other site). A blog is much more ephemeral. The top page of a Wiki,
with the items it points to, is a (relative) constant. The top page of a blog changes with
every posting. Thus, a Wiki is better for information that needs to be "sticky." A blog is
much more akin to the morning newspaper - fresh, but changing.

  27. Nowadays everything develops very quickly. Only some 20-30 years ago most people in our country didn’t know what a computer was, and Internet was a strange word for them. Now we can’t imagine a day without a computer. We can sit at home in front of the screen and know about the events in the whole world. Computers and Internet help us a lot and not only in our everyday routine, but in our education process, too. There are a lot of different teaching technologies. Among them there are wikis and blogs. The main difference between them is the contributor (a person who adds, changes or deletes the information). In blogs there is only one person who can make it, and other people can just comment on some items, and wikis are open to collaboration. In the classroom wikis can be useful for group projects, and blogs – for individual tasks. As for the content of both, the number of articles and their comments in wikis grow very quickly, while in blogs everything depends on only one person who may not always have time to do something in his or her blog.
So, wiki and blog both have their advantages and disadvantages, but everything depends on the task which was given to students.

  29. Well, basically, the main difference between wikis and blogs was already mentioned in the posts above but there is still something worth being mentioned.

Taking into consideration the inner nature and purposes of both internet products we may differentiate between blog and wiki on the basis of the content. There are actually exceptions but primarily in blog the person writes about him-/herself, about the ongoing events in his/her life etc. In blogs one expresses his/her opinion towards something or somebody, while wiki is a kind of encyclopedia, the collection of thematic posts with the extension in some topic. As an example we may take Wikipedia as an encyclopedia about everything in the world, but at the same time wiki allows communities to organize projects, for instance some IT community made its own wiki where one may find useful (or not that essential :)) articles about significant events in the world of IT (when, what, for what purpose and so on) actually the all kinds of information more or less connected with IT.

Well, something like this about the difference between blogs and wikis :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well, they are quite the same for me, this online exposure again, the big difference here is the fact that one of it(blog) is totally personal and wikis are absolutely group project. Blog is for sharing ideas, however wikis are for developing ideas. Shaping wikis is way more messy, blog is done presumably by one person, while wikis could have million followers. That is a great idea to generate ideas for something big and crucial, but it can turn into a total mess sometimes...

Both hands for the wikis, nothing i could hate more than blogs! :)

  31. Blogs and Wikis should be used for different kinds of activites. Blog - for those ones that should be controled only by a teacher. For example, blog can be used for leaving personal comments on different topics of discussion that took place during the class that should evaluated by the teacher. Wikis can be used mostly for group projects in which inly the result should be evaluated by the teacher.

  32. It seems that the initial comment didn't come through after all. Oh well, wouldn't be the first time I screwed something up.
Anyway, these are some positive points about Wikis:
    - Organisation: in terms of offering a simple, yet incredibly effective general structural formula, wikis are far and away the best choice for a group-work assignment. They are the form, that is relatively easy to use and at the same time can present a very complex end result. There are two main points for their effectiveness:
    a) Every article can be linked to any other one, creating a web of information on potentially any number of subjects. It is a part of their base functionality.
    b) They are very easy to edit and it can be done by any member of a certain community.
    - Group Interaction: although wikis can be used for personal notes keeping, they really shine when it comes to group projects, for no other asset requires the interaction between every member of the group on such a basic level. Every single contributor should be aware and respectful towards the actions of others. Otherwise it simply won’t work. This is the kind of activity where strong individuality might actually impede the progress of the whole group and set it several steps back.
    - Accessibility: once again the internet access can facilitate the group work to a degree. Students can very well work together without being restricted to one class and without the constant need of meetings throughout the duration of the project.
    - Language Practice: this particular point requires some explanation, I believe. Not all of the students, but a fair number of them tend to develop very distinct individual writing styles. And while that is considered to be a good thing, it not always is, especially within the boundaries of the scientific discourse. Most wikis have so called “style guides” to help the contributors stay within certain limits of what is and isn’t acceptable in the community. That requires an ability to abandon one’s writing habits in favour of a more general and neutral types of delivery, which results in a challenge and a perfect opportunity to review and enrich one’s writing techniques.

  33. In short, a blog is a "website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in reverse chronological order".

  35. Blog and Wiki share a number of features: both of them are websites generated by users providing an option to comment on the content. But in blog time is important. It is organized like a journal in reverse chronological order. For wiki time matters less: the article is updated as soon as the new information comes. Wiki allows multiple authors to create and modify the information whereas blog represents mainly the one persons' opinion followed by comments. So blogs usually have a single author. Wiki page is continuously changing, updating and growing rapidly. Blog is good when there is a person who coordinates actions (one-to-many communication) while in wiki coordinator is not obligatory.

    1. I can't say that Blogs are better than Wiki or vice versa. Each of these sites useful and interesting in their own way. Each has its own characteristics, but however, complements a virtual "bro." If we compare these services with the modes of government, the blogs - this oligarchy because the one who registered the blog can interact with similar, communicate, implement certain activities; wiki, in this case, it's a democracy (which is aptly described in the video about the debates ) as a service for groupware, where given tasks solved collectively.
